UAW win is right in line with President Biden’s priorities

Unions, historically, have been associated with Democratics. There’s a good reason for that. As President Biden has said repeatedly, we Democrats are working to build the economy from the middle out, and from the bottom up. That means we need to strengthen the health of the middle class – financial, physical, and mental/emotional health. Unions are the best way to get that accomplished for the working class.

Unions are Good for Corporations

Unions work to secure essentials (a living wage, a path to a secure retirement, good health care benefits) for their workers, but does this mean that the corporation suffers? Not at all. As Henry Ford proved back in 1914, providing a truly living wage for workers benefits the corporation as a whole. It stabilizes the workforce, and makes it possible for the workforce to purchase the products it produces. Workers in good health whose minds are focused on their jobs (as opposed to worrying about financial woes) do better, and more consistent work for the company. Such workers are more likely to remain loyal to the company as well, meaning less time and money is spent training new hires.

UAW win means More Unions means More Working Class Victories

So, while the UAW’s win of higher starting wages, greater wage increases, bigger retirement contributions, and discounts for select car purchases sounds like a bitter pill for the auto companies to swallow, the truth is that everyone benefits. The UAW win is just the first step to lifting up the middle class, which is why President Biden took the historic step of speaking to the picket line. CEOs do not have the overall economy’s health at heart, which is why we need Unions, and a President who supports them.
