West Virginia’s Cash Cow

Nobody likes to pay taxes, but everybody likes a bargain. When it comes to federal funds, West Virginia gets far more money from the Federal Government than its residents pay into the Federal Government (via income taxes). The money we get includes money for building and repairing roads, bridges, airports and railways; money to expand and improve broadband coverage; funds for medicaid expansion; social security and medicare for elderly residents (who support the local economy) and benefits for veterans (who also support the local economy). We get money from federal grants, as well.

Due to the impoverished state of many of the citizens of WV and the unwillingness of the WV state government to spend more money on its citizens (instead declaring that there is a huge surplus in state funds), the vast majority of the other states in our nation subsidize our state. While we should be working to minimize that dependency, the last thing in the world that we should be doing is advocating for reduced federal spending. With the oldest population among states, and one of the highest veteran populations, the last thing we should want to do is cut off the flow of funds from our Cash Cow, the federal government. Vote for Democrats for responsible money management that benefits all citizens, not draconian reductions that will further impoverish our neighbors.
